Protected Connected (ProtConn) [BIP]
Protected Connected (ProtConn) [BIP]
Indicator description
Protected Connected (ProtConn) is an indicator of terrestrial protected area (PA) connectivity that is defined as the percentage of a country or region covered by protected and connected lands. It assesses how well designed a PA system is for connectivity. It is easy to communicate and to compare with PA coverage: the percentage of protected and connected land (ProtConn) can never be higher than the percentage of protected land (PA coverage). ProtConn is in most cases lower than PA coverage, because not all PAs are well connected. ProtConn also identifies the main priorities for improving or sustaining PA connectivity in each country or region. It has been developed and is produced and updated by the Digital Observatory for Protected Areas (DOPA) of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission since 2016, as described in Saura et al. (2017, 2018). It has been assessed globally at the ecoregion and country levels.
