Trends in the numbers of invasive alien species introduction events [BIP]

Trends in the numbers of invasive alien species introduction events [BIP]

Indicator description

This indicator measures the trends of invasive alien species introduction events (IAS) of 21 countries, which were selected for having at least 30 records of species with a known invasion date. Species were designated as invasive according to standard evidence-based criteria. The indicator was based on 3914 IAS and 4903 species-country records. While all taxonomic groups were considered, the majority of the records are plants, invertebrates, fish, mammals and birds.

Mapping with SPMS 2015-2023

CMS Target 7

Multiple anthropogenic pressures have been reduced to levels that are not detrimental to the conservation of migratory species or to the functioning, integrity, ecological connectivity and resilience of their habitats.

Mapping with Sustainable Development Goals

SDG Target 15.8

By 2020, introduce measures to prevent the introduction and significantly reduce the impact of invasive alien species on land and water ecosystems and control or eradicate the priority species

Mapping with 4th Ramsar Strategic Plan 2016-2024

Ramsar Target 4

Invasive alien species and pathways of introduction and expansion are identified and prioritized, priority invasive alien species are controlled or eradicated, and management responses are prepared and implemented to prevent their introduction and establishment.

Baseline
  • 36% of Parties have established national policies or guidelines on invasive species control and management. (National Reports to COP12).
  • 20% of Parties have a national inventory of invasive alien species that currently or potentially impact the ecological character of wetlands. (National Reports to COP12).
Indicator
  • % of Parties that have established or reviewed national policies or guidelines on invasive wetland species control and management. (Data source: National Reports).
  • % of Parties having a national inventory of invasive alien species that currently or potentially impact the ecological character of wetlands. (Data source: National Reports).

Possible further indicators that may be developed

  • {Number of invasive species that are being controlled through management actions}
  • {Effectiveness of wetland invasive alien species control programmes}
